B&Q I COMPLETE YOUR BATHROOM BATHROOM LIGHTING Your bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home. It's where you get ready every morning and where you relax after a long day. With this in mind, choosing the right lighting for each of those tasks is vital. What type of lighting? Task lighting is functional, providing light for shaving, make up and washing Spotlights or ceiling downlighters are best. Downlights can provide overall light or additional light over basins, concealed in your ceiling or shelving Feature lighting creates mood and atmosphere; try ceiling lights controlled by a dimmer switch. (Dimmer switches can only be used in Outside Zones) Understanding safety and IP ratings Bathroom lighting regulations require all lighting to adhere to IP (Ingress Protection) ratings to ensure it is safe to use in a wet environment. A bathroom suite is made up of different zones (as shown in the diagram below) and depending on the distance from the water source, determines the type of lighting allowed. Zone O Example Inside the bath or shower itself MUST BE IP67 RATED IP 67 Zone 1 The area above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m from the floor - MUST BE MINIMUM OF IP44 RATED (or IP45 if exposed to water jets) IP65 RATING RECOMMENDED IP 65 Zone 2 The area stretching 0.6m outside the perimeter of the bath and to a height of 2.25m from the floor MUST BE MINIMUM OF IP44 RATED IP44 Outside zones 0.6m The area anywhere outside of the above zones, any lights used in a bathroom-RECOMMENDED IP RATING OF AT LEAST IP44 2 IP 20 A 30mA RCD must be used. All new and modified electrical installations must comply with the latest ET Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and bathroom lighting products must be installed in accordance with local Building Regulations.
