Dear Customer, I want to take this
opportunity to thank you for your
support in 2022.
Over the past number of years, we’ve faced
consecutive unprecedented challenges from a
pandemic to the atrocities of war in Europe, Brexit,
to the cost-of-living crisis. As a member of the
business community in towns across the country,
it’s our aim to be a pillar of stability and support.
We do everything we can to make our customers’
lives a little easier by providing nutritious, quality
products at the lowest prices, meaning our
shoppers don’t have to compromise.
At this time of the year, attention turns to New Year’s
resolutions, so I want to outline Lidl’s promises to
shoppers in Ireland for the coming year:
To always deliver the lowest possible prices. Amidst
rising inflation and the cost-of-living crisis, our core
commitment to our customers that we won’t be beaten
on price is even more relevant. It is something we will
never lose focus on and is the fundamental promise
that we have built our reputation on since entering
the Irish market in 2000. Our recent “Go Full Lidl”
campaign highlights the fact that by shopping at Lidl,
you don’t need to compromise on quality or price.
However, low prices do not mean low quality – we
continue to develop our own brand labels to the
highest possible standards through rigorous quality
control processes. This is evident in the more than 190
product awards we won in 2022 alone.
To continue to invest in Irish suppliers to support
the local economy. We are proud to have established
relationships with more than 400 Irish suppliers from
Bantry to Ballyjamesduff, Gorey to Galway. I would
also like to thank them for the enormous efforts they
put in to keep the supply chain going through the
many challenges of the past year. Irish food and drink
have an incredible reputation abroad and Lidl is proud
to fly the Irish flag and facilitate export deals to our
global network in 30 countries. Beef from Cavan can
be found on shelves in Copenhagen and gin from
West Cork is enjoyed by customers in Bratislava. Our
Kickstart programme has also supported more
than 400 small Irish businesses since we started the
programme 6 years ago.
To further support local communities through our
charity partners. Since partnering with our national
charity partner, Jigsaw, the National Centre for Youth
Mental Health back in 2017 we have raised more than
€1.8 million for the cause. Our mission to support the
charity through ground-breaking initiatives such as
One Good Club and One Good School has benefited
thousands of young people across the country and
it’s work that we’re extremely proud of. We will
also continue our long-standing commitment to
local food charities through our partner FoodCloud.
Since partnering with FoodCloud in 2017 we
have redistributed nearly 3 million meals to local
communities, supporting food redistribution from our
stores and warehouses to more than 300 local charities
across Ireland.
To uphold our responsibility to be good stewards
of the environment. As the Most Reputable
Retailer in Ireland in the 2022 RepTrak Study and
the Most Sustainable Retailer in the 2022 RepTrak
Sustainability Index, we will continue to build on our
green credentials. Some of our areas of focus include
continuing to set ambitious targets around plastic
reductions and the recyclability of our products, our
environmental impact with the installation of more
solar panels on stores and warehouses as well as
creating pollinator zones across our network.
To continue to create valuable employment as
we expand our footprint across the country. Our
employees are the bedrock of our business, which
is why we have prioritised building not only an
exceptional place to work, but also an inclusive,
rewarding and fulfilling culture for our employees. We
are exceptionally proud to continue to be an employer
of choice, and for the second year running we have
been recognised by the Top Employers Institute as a
Top Employer for 2022. We’ve also heavily invested in
offering industry-leading benefits to our employees
such as being the first Irish retailer to announce paid
time off for employees undergoing fertility treatment
and once again committing to paying the Living Wage
for a seventh year in a row.
As a business we recognise that 2023 will be a very
difficult year for many, however, be assured that we are
doing our utmost to make sure our communities have
access to affordable, healthy and quality food.
