An over view of Regulatory Requirements for Allergens
The Food Information for Consumers Regulation EU Regulation 1169/2011 came into force on the 13th December
2014. It describes how allergen information should be provided and on food that is pre packed, sold loose or served
out of home.
The regulation applies to all food business operators at all stages of the food chain where their activities concern the
provision of the food information to consumers
The intention of this legislation is to allow the consumer to make informed choices at point of purchase.lt standardises
the way this type of information is presented, making it easier for consumers to make an informed decision when
selecting a product.
Allergic reactions to food make people ill and in some rare situations can be fatal. This legislation means that
Consumers with a food allergy or intolerance should be able to rely on food businesses to provide written allergen
information in the most easily accessible manner so that they can make safe food choices when eating out, when
consuming takeaways or when ordering food for delivery to their home or workplace.
The main feature is that at point of sale, information on the 14 specified allergens needs to be provided in written
format at for the food products sold loose in store.
Responsibilities of the Food Business Operator (Owner / Manager)
Ensure that information for each product sold loose or pre-packed is available in written format at point of sale
for the consumer
Ensure all food handlers have a thorough knowledge of all ingredients used and recipes.
Provide staff training in basic allergen controls and in-house procedures to make sure staff are aware about
cross-contamination risks and how to minimise risk
Provide Refresher training as necessary
